TOUR 5:

WELTENBURG MONASTERY, DANUBE BOAT RIDE , LIBERATION HALL and RATISBONA: (10 hours)

We will pick you up at 9:00 AM from your hotel and will start our tour driving north-east of Munich headed to the city of RATISBONA and the CZECH REPUBLIC.

Our first stop will be at the Benectine Abbey of WELTENBURG (the oldest monastery in Bavaria), which was built right next to the DANUBE river and it is composed of several interesting buildings, including the famous baroque church , a masterpiece of the architect-brothers ASAM, a museum, shops and two restaurants with a beergarden right under huge chestnut trees.

You will then board a ship with restaurant facilities. The boat ride will only take 30 minutes, but it is through a breathtaking natural environment and will arrive in Kelheim landing stage. The driver will pick you up in KELHEIM for an visit to the LIBERATION HALL.

The LIBERATION HALL, in German "Befreiungshalle" is a historical classical monument upon MOUNT MICHELSBERG, above the city of KELHEIM. It stands upstream of RATISBONA on the DANUBE river, at the confluence of this river and the ALTMÜHL river.

KING LUDWIG I, ordered the "Befreiungshalle" to be built in order to commemorate the victories against NAPOLEON during the WARS OF LIBERATION that lasted from 1813 to 1815.

The construction was started in 1842 by FRIEDRICH VON GÄRTNER in a mixture of classical and cristian styles. At the behest of the King, LEO VON KLENZE altered the plans and completed the building in 1863.

Then we will drive to RATISBONA, in german " Regensburg",  a city located at the confluence of the DANUBE and REGEN rivers, at one of the northernmost points of the Danube. To the east lies the BAVARIAN FOREST. Regensburg is the capital of the Bavarian administrative region  UPPER PALATINATE. The large medieval centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will walk in the downtown area.

Options to this tour is to either book a tour to visit the famous THURN und TAXIS palace in RATISBONA or to visit the  family owned brewery KUCHLBAUER with a tour to the production line ending with a visit to the famous HUNDERTWASSER Tower, a modern art tower with impressive artistic add ons.  (see pictures below!)

We expect to be back in Munich at around 7:00 PM.
