TOUR 4 HERRENCHIEMSEE PALACE /SALZBURG
PART A: The Island of Herrenchiemsee Palace
Southwest of Munich on the highway to Salzburg we find the biggest lake of the State of Bavaria and third largest of Germany, called CHIEMSEE (Lake of Chiem) approximately 14 km long by 10 km wide. We will drive to the very nice port of the small city of Prien, located in the CHIEMGAU Valley, and take a ship tour along some parts of the lake. Placed on an island we will find another majestic palace and surrounding parks build by the eccentric and romantic King Ludwig II. On the island you might want to take a horse carriage to get to the palace or enjoy a 20 min. walk. On the way back to Prien you might want to stop at another island called FRAUENINSEL (women’s island). This island is named after the existing monastery on the island, where during part of the last century only women’s or “sisters” were allowed. Today on the little island also normal people and families live there. Some of them are still lake fishers, making catches of 13 different kinds of fishes.
PART B: City of Salzburg / Austria
Crossing the border into Austria, we will reach the old traditional, second largest city of Austria, SALZBURG (castle of salt). Salzburg is considered the cultural and spiritual jewel of Austria and one of most beautiful old cities nestled deep in the Austrian alp. We will show you the birthplace of Mozart, his family residence, and where he played his first concert when he was just 6 years old. You will see some of the famous locations in town including the 8th century abbey, where the real “Maria von Trapp” spent time as a novice and other places used in the famous musical movie with Julie Andrews and her “sound of Music” places.
You will have time for yourself for shopping or visiting the HOHENSALZBURG (fortress) which stands high above the old town with magnificent panoramic views of the surroundings area. Discover the catacombs of the 13th century monks, spent time in the 8th century Cathedral, see the oldest restaurant in Austria dated 803 AD or visit the birthplace of the great physicist Christian Doppler. Sample afterwards their since over 500 years brewed beer or indulge in their famous “SACHER TORTE”: known as the best chocolate cake of the world.
